Accessibility

This statement explains how accessible this website is for people with disabilities, what was done to make it so, how that was checked, and what is still not right.

The target

The site is built to WCAG 2.2, level AA — the international standard for the accessibility of web content.

Status

Partially conformant. We know of no WCAG 2.2 level AA criterion that this site fails. But it has not been audited by an independent expert, and it has not been tested with people who use assistive technology every day, so we do not claim full conformance. What we do claim is that everything we could check, we checked — and below is how.

What was done

• Everything you press is at least 44 pixels tall on a phone screen. Controls that exist only on a large screen and are operated with a mouse are 35 pixels, which clears the required 24 by 24.
• Every form field has a label bound to it, and errors are announced as a message a screen reader reads out at once — they are not signalled by colour alone.
• Focus is always visible. Every element reachable by keyboard gets a visible ring, even where the design asked for none.
• The questions and answers, and the phone menu, are real buttons. Enter and space work, and they announce whether they are open or closed.
• The phone menu does not trap focus. It is an ordinary expanding part of the page rather than a window on top of it: what is behind it stays reachable, Tab carries on through the page, and Escape closes it.
• Contrast meets the required 4.5:1 everywhere. The brand's own colour was too light — white text on it measured 4.4956:1, a thousandth below the threshold — so it was darkened by one step and now measures 4.5587:1. The difference is invisible to the eye, and an automated check will not let it drift back.
• The text reads without JavaScript. Every page is built in advance as plain HTML, with no cookies, no analytics and no request to any third-party server.
• Each page declares its language in the markup (mk, en, el), so screen readers pronounce the text correctly.
• The fonts are served from this site itself, with a separate cut for Cyrillic, Latin and Greek, so no letter is substituted even on a slow connection.
• There are no animations. The only movement is a 200-millisecond colour fade, and even that is switched off when the system asks for reduced motion.
• The first link on the page is "skip to content", so a keyboard user need not walk through the whole menu.

How it was checked

• Automated testing with axe across 15 combinations — all three languages in five states: the home page, the phone menu open, the form showing errors, the privacy page and this page. No findings at all, at any severity.
• The home page was reviewed at six widths from 375 to 1440 pixels, measuring that no control drops below 44 pixels.
• Keyboard operation, focus order and the menu's behaviour were checked by hand.
• Contrast was calculated for every colour and text pair in use, not judged by eye.

What is still not right

• Automated testing is not proof. Tools like axe detect fewer than half of the WCAG requirements. The rest was checked by hand — by people who do not use assistive technology daily.
• The answers to the questions open with JavaScript. With it switched off the page still reads, but the answers stay closed.
• The date field opens the browser's own calendar, whose accessibility depends on the device and is not under our control. The date is optional and can also be written in the message.
• The English and Greek versions have not been reviewed by a native speaker. Awkward wording is a barrier to understanding like any other.
• The photo gallery is not published yet. When it is, every image will carry a text description.
• The site has not been audited externally, and has not been tested by someone who uses a screen reader every day.
